How can we promote the environmental activities among the public? Many environmentalists are of the opinion that the need for conserving the forests and environment should be inculcated in the minds of children, so that they will keep the movement alive. This kind of approach seems to be successful and many schools have started to create awareness among children regarding the environmental problems, make them plant saplings, and above all, inculcate a feeling of love towards nature. The State Government of Rajastan a few years back came up with a new project, in which they urged the government school children to grow bio-intensive gardens. This project helped the children get acquainted with various processes involved in gardening. It also created a sense of responsibility and pride in them and also an awareness and love towards nature. Kerala too can adopt this method. As a land of Ayurveda, the State can promote growing of medicinal plants in schools. The authorities should make children aware of the significance of medicinal plants and encourage them to create a herbal garden. The schools can have a tie-up with kerala ayurvedic resorts/ Ayurvedic hospitals/spas and the medicinal plants grown here can be sold to these institutions. Thus it will bring in some economic benefit to the school/children apart from providing an insight into the significance of plants around us.
