Andreas, in this talk by Georgios Kontogeorgis, a member of the audience at minute 1.13.54 asks a question, essentially whether Capodistrias was assassinated by the Mavromichalises or by "the English". Kontogiorgis says that the question is "unimportant" and that it is not good to "personalize" the issue.
Is this answer traceable to the stigma that is attached to the assertion that the Mavromichalises did NOT assassinate Capodistrias?
(For those not familiar with the Capodistrias story, here is an account by Greek historian Thanos Veremis:
Mr Veremis reproduces the "official account" of the assassination.
Is the mayor of Piraeus with this story of the statue (erecting in Piraeus a statue to Petrobey Mavromichalis) attempting to show rejection of the apparent taboo on saying that the Mavromichalises did NOT assassinate Capodistrias?
And if he is, perhaps this is not because he is from the Mani (like the Mavromichalis family) or because he is "far right" or whatever the hell he is.
Is Georgios Kontogeorgis equivocating?
I note the reaction of our friend and fellow Aeginetan, admiral Heracles Kalogerakis, of my wife Vasso, of active Aegina citizen Toula Zorba. I also note the problematic expressed by Stratos Pantavos.

Our association has brought to Aegina the most distinguished historians: Veremis, Efthimiou, Koukos. Can we have information on what is involved behind the details on Petrobey?

Why is Moralis doing this? Why are the Corfiots raising objections. Isn't it true that they loathed Capodistrias when the time came for his people to bury him there (in his home town). Is it Moralis' view that Capodistrias was assassinated by "the English" (and not by the Mavromichalises?)

It is not possible at a time when our community is being stressed to erect a statue to people who will sow division. Yes Petrobey was a hero, but he was the father and brother of the assassins of a person we all admire. Aren't there other heroes to honour? Do we need this now?

Of course not.
An incomprehensible decision.

Perhaps we should ask for the view of some reputable historians. Personally I can't express a view without first getting reliable information.

Statue of Petrobey Mavromichalis in Piraeus!
The son of Corfu
The mayor of Piraeus Giannis Moralis says that it has already been erected and the inauguration will take place in the next few weeks!
Expect a harsh response from the mayor of Corfu against the unwanted presence on the island of Corfu of the mayor of Piraeus!
In a city with a strong influence of the Ionian island element and its patron saint Spyridon it is insulting for a statue to be erected to the assassin of governor Capodistrias

Freedom of expression! On the internet everyone writes whatever he likes. What history records counts. If someone wants to change the written record this requires much more documentation from competent sources and not facebook, I think.
