From Dylan Jones: "There were plenty of concerns as least as far back as the 1950’s that Pre-G radio-waves did indeed harm life. Many workers at radar stations had complained of eye injuries, temporary and permanent sterility, internal bleeding and other problems, and research was carried out in the Soviet Union, the US, Poland, Italy and Britain.
Public debate began in 1973 in the US. The biologist Robert Becker was commissioned by the US Navy to evaluate the effects of their antenna system used to communicate with submerged submarines. Congress was concerned about the potentially harmful effects on health and the environment. Becker and his graduate student, Andrew Marino, had already found that animals exposed to Non-ionising electromagnetic radiation suffered adverse effects. They and several other scientists looked at 30 studies, two-thirds of which had found biological effects on slime-moulds, rats, birds and humans from exposure. All the panel members thought the proposed antenna was a potential hazard to human health and recommended further study.
They then realised that high-voltage powerlines posed the same or even greater threat and recommended that the Navy should advise the President that many Americans might be at risk.
That’s when the Military/Industrial complex stepped in and persecuted Becker, using scientific figures such as Herman Schwan, of Project Paperclip fame, to discredit him. Schwan used the same line of argument used today, that Non-ionising radiation was safe if it did not cause heating, dismissing and ignoring the non-thermal argument, which was the basis of Becker’s work. He also ignored all the Soviet research coming out at the time on non-thermal effects. The idea is that the electro-magnetic fields can interfere with inter and intra-cellular communication and signalling which can disrupt biological functioning, especially over sustained periods.
The same corporate malfeasance is in play to this day and only fools and madmen would not, at the very least, deploy the precautionary principle."
