Each year in August the right-wing eccentric Dimitris Kollatos has a film festival in Aegina, on the spacious grounds of his estate. Last year there was a satire, Alexis and Yanis, supposedly about Alexis Tsipras and Yanis Varoufakis, presented as a pair of gays. It was written by Kollatos’ son and is in the same spirit as the bad-taste and servile satire on the Royal Family that one sees in the UK. And Yanis Varoufakis is not Royal Family. This year it is going to be presented again, with more publicity. On territory that in the past Varoufakis has described as his home ground. To me personally it seems pointless to be confronting Alexis Tsipras publicly if one ignores this kind of sub-Tsipras level satire. It is satire that panders to the gutless and irresponsible right wing… Varoufakis is in Aegina at the moment. I saw him in the street today on his motorcycle. All things being equal there seems to be no reason why he and his wife could not go along to the performance of this satire and see how the satirists react to them. This has nothing to do with being pro or anti gay. What is involved is just very conformist satire. Of course all people mentioned here are free to do whatever they like. And I am free to write this.
