ANNOUNCEMENT
¢kkuyu : The European Commission should wake up!
The Cyprus Greens express disappointment and exasperation at the stance of the European Commission on Turkey's nuclear programme and in particular Ankara's plans to construct a nuclear power plant directly opposite Cyprus at Akkuyu.
The Cyprus Greens are commencing a Europe-wide campaign from tomorrow to establish a movement of European citizens against the construction of new nuclear power plants in the Mediterranean.
Our objective is to gain the co-operation of all citizens' groupings in Cyprus, Greece and Turkey as well as the big environmental organizations.
We aim to secure one million signatures so that the European Commission and European Parliament are obliged to pass legislation that will ban the construction of new nuclear power plants in earthquake-prone regions, and particularly in the volatile Mediterranean region. It should be noted that recent developments in the Mediterranean confirm that the region is characterized by political instability and dangerous upheavals which make every nuclear installation an unacceptable risk.
