Turnbull was the leader of the Australian republican movement and led the failed campaign in 1999 to establish an Australian republic. At the time Abbott headed Australians for Constitutional Monarchy. The Turnbull proposal would have led to constitutional chaos because there was no agreement within his movement whether they wanted a presidential republic or a parliamentary republic. The media barrage was as powerfully behind him then as it is now.
